Trilobites, shark’s teeth, and crinoids, oh my! The Mineral Wells Fossil Park opened to statewide fanfare in May, as it is one of just a handful of public fossil parks where visitors may actually take their finds with them. The rustic, 8-acre site about 3 miles northwest of Mineral Wells is a free attraction perfect for groups and families. Expect to find small remnants of the Pennsylvanian Period, about 300 million years ago, when the area was under water.
The fossil park is a joint venture between the city of Mineral Wells and the Dallas Paleontological Society and is operated by the city. The park is open 8 a.m. to dusk Friday through Monday.
